I must say, I am not certain that this item is a Jewish Havdalah, Besamim, Esrog Spice Box.  It is stamped on the bottom -what I think is Rockford (you can only see the ford) Silver Plate Co., above that is Quadruple, with a faint marking of the scales in the middle. Under this is stamped 1258.  This is a wonderful piece no matter what it is.  I purchased it at a sale and the man did say something to me about spices, at the time I had no idea what he was talking about.  After researching, I wonder, did he mean the Jewish Spice Box.

This piece is beautifully decorated.  On the upright is a ladder like piece that can be raised and turned which also raises the top to the spice area.  The top is decorated with leaves and a railing around the edge.   The body has grape vines, and winged cherubs riding goats!  The feet are also wonderfully decorative.

The role of the spice box is to contain the pleasant fragrant spices that are sniffed to console and invigorate our souls.  Spice boxes are used in the weekly ritual Havdalah -marking the departure of the Sabbath.  Some families have traditional spice mixtures handed down.  Etrog, esrog, besamim, havdalah, are some of the names I have found.  If any of this information is in error, please forgive me, I am learning.

This container does have some damage.  On the tallest upright piece, I believe there is a horizontal piece missing that would have connected to the slanted piece.  In two places on the "top" to the spice area I believe smaller leaves are missing, only noticeable if you look hard.  The inside is clean and in good condition.
