Vintage santon figurine, a woman in a black dress with a yellow apron.  Santons have been made in Provence France since the late 1700's.  They are made for Nativity scenes, of terra cotta, and hand painted.  I do believe this santon has some age to it, I have not been able to find any similar to these.

She is in a black dress with a brown collar, a tie around her waist and a yellow apron with red spots, and a hat that is sitting on the back of her head.  There is wear to the paint and some scuff marks, a small chip from the front corner of the base.  No markings on the bottom.

Santons originated during the French Revolution when churches were forcibly closed, and the people could no longer have their large nativity sets.

This santon stands 4 3/4 inches tall with a 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 inch base.

I have five santons available, to see them all please type santon in the search box.
