Description

(This rabbit has been sold, I do have another rabbit in cabbage listed here).

A wonderful old rabbit in cabbage automata.  Made in France by the Roullet and DeCamps Company in the early 1900's.  A delightful windup toy with music -when wound the rabbits head rises out of the cabbage and turns around, raising and lowering as the music plays.  A video of this rabbit can be found here

The key is original and has the initials R D. It screws on so I expect that is why it has survived with the rabbit all these years.  On the bottom is stamped Made In France.  The key is wound and you pull the rod to start movement.

I contacted automatomania.co.uk when I found this piece, it was not working at the time.  They referred me to someone in the States who repairs automata.  This rabbit has now had its mechanics cleaned and oiled so it is now working very well. The ears do not raise as high as they should, their movement is inside the head and was not repaired.  I have listed several additional pictures to show the different stages of movement.

I saw my first Rabbit In Cabbage on the old movie, "You Can't Take It With You" with Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, and Jean Arthur.  It is a wonderful old movie, if you haven't seen it you should surely check it out.
